I am looking outside at a very beautiful day. Blue skies, no humidity. Most of the kids and grandkids are here and we are planning a great weekend together. All in all, I am very thankful of who I am, where I am and the gifts that God has granted me. My biggest prayer and hope is that I use my gifts wisely and contribute back. Which brings me to my point for today.
In the midst of all the picnics and parties and fireworks, please take a few moments to reflect on what Independence Day means. This country was born and remains free because of the efforts and sacrifices of many men and women. This holiday honors our freedom from the oppression placed on us by another country. Men and boys fought hard to make us independent from tyranny. The leaders we have chosen over our two plus centuries of existence may not have been the best and may not have always protected what this country was built on but you have a responsibility too.
It is time to better teach our children what Independence Day means. And I don't mean the Will Smith movie about alien invasion, although I love the President's speech in that movie. It is time to reinstill in our children and nation that we are "One nation, under God." We need to stop apologizing for our nation being founded with God in it. When we were born, Judaism and Islam also existed, and we didn't apologize then and we shouldn't now. We were founded to allow people to practice their faith freely and peacefully, not to hide ours because it might offend someone else. People died for us to be able to do this.
People died to stop taxation without representation! It is your duty and privilege to vote and put people in office who will truly represent you. I am personally tired of people representing us who push a party agenda and barter our rights for privileges for themselves or the lobbyists that they truly represent. There is no hope in that ever improving if you don't exercise your right to vote.
We are the "Land of Opportunity". That means the opportunity to better yourself and provide for yourself and your family is available to you. You must pursue the opportunities and work to achieve. It does not mean sitting back and living off the government and the people who honorably pay taxes. The welfare system was meant to be a temporary fix and assistance during the depression. It has become a monster that we continue to feed with tax money. The Bible says if you teach a man to fish he will be able to provide many meals, if you give him a fish he becomes dependent. We have created an entire society of people looking for handouts. The Bible also wants us to help our fellow man, so I don't mean that we should turn our backs on people, but providing a living and providing assistance to get someone back on their feet are two different things.
Remember to honor those who serve and have served. I am not really into parades and things like that. I prefer to remember them daily with prayers. They serve, served and died with the belief that they are protecting our rights and freedoms. In my church, every Sunday we pray for our church leaders, we pray for the President and our civil leaders and we pray for the Armed Forces serving in defense of Freedom. Thank them when you see them, on behalf of their service in whatever capacity and on behalf of those who served before them and with them who cannot be here to accept your thanks. Pray for them every day. Pray for our country and thank God for the opportunities that you have before you!
Happy Fourth of July, Happy Independence Day!
